Distinguished Invited University Professor Toshihide Maskawa was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics, gfor the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the existence of at least three families of quarks in natureh.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2008 jointly to Yoichiro Nambu, University of Chicago, Makoto Kobayashi (Ph.D. 1972 at Nagoya University), High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), and Toshihide Maskawa (Ph.D. 1967 at Nagoya University), Distinguished Invited University Professor of Nagoya University (Kyoto University and Kyoto Sangyo University).
Professor Maskawa serves as a lecturer for the IAR Freshmen Lecture Series gAppreciating the Fun of Research (Tuesday 1 h, Term I)h. The title of his lecture in academic year 2008 is gThe Rule of Science and Developmenth, which was delivered to about 300 freshmen from all departments of the University.
